Christian Leadership Curriculum

Strategies for Success 3
Building on individual strengths, this course prepares adult students for college success and sharpens their critical thinking, writing, and research skills. It also integrates biblical principles into personal strategies for success within and beyond the Degree Completion Program.
Interpersonal Communication 3
This course studies the elements of effective communication. Increasing self-awareness and improving personal effectiveness are emphasized. A study of scripture’s direction concerning communication and consideration of cultural traditions as they impact communication styles is included.
Adult Development and Aging 3
This course provides a biopsychosocial orientation to aging processes in adulthood. It includes basic theoretical models, research results, and other current information on the psychology of adulthood and aging. Community support for adults as they age and experience various development challenges, including the loss of physical health and loss of relationships, will also be included. Emphasis will be placed on successful aging through the prevention of illness both physically and psychologically.
The Art of Interpretation 3
Provides an understanding of how the Bible came to be and introduces the basic principles and skills required to interpret it accurately. The emphasis will be on understanding and application of scripture in today’s world. The skills developed will then be related to reading critically other subject materials.
Counseling Theory 3
An introduction to basic theories of counseling and an analysis of their credibility from a Christian Perspective. Legal and ethical issues, including reporting requirements in abusive situations are included.
Foundations of Leadership 3
Introduces basic leadership theory and foundational leadership perspectives from the Bible.
Project Management 3
A practical overview of the discipline of Project Management and its broad utilization within profit and not-for-profit organizations including personal application in planning and project execution. Emphasis of the class includes a focus on tools, terminology and software applications used in Project Management and introduction to the certification requirements and process for various Project Management professional designations.
Internship I 3
Practical application and further development of ministry concepts learned in class. Students participate in a 6 month internship in a ministry setting under the direct guidance of a ministry supervisor. This educational experience allows students to learn by being involved in the observation, contemplation, and practice of ministry.
Counseling Skills 3
Focuses on the appropriate use of techniques and strategies in counseling. Includes skills used to assess needs and make appropriate referrals. Emphasizes demonstration and application.
Old Testament Literature 3
An introduction to the literature of the Old Testament containing God’s revelation of His character and His works in creation and history until the coming of Jesus Christ. Emphasis will be placed on an understanding of the main themes of all Scripture as they are introduced in the Old Testament.
Marriage and Family 3
An integrated study of marriage and family relationships from theological and psychological perspectives, that prepares students to develop a personal philosophy of family and set the foundation for the development of a family ministry. Includes a personal evaluation of familial experiences and a look at cultural norms and biblical principles. This skill building course prepares students for participation in leadership of family life.
Small Group Communication 3
An integrated study, from theological and psychological perspectives, of effective small group leadership. Students will be equipped to lead small groups and to train others in small group leadership.
New Testament Literature 3
This course introduces the student to the literary genres, historical background, cultural settings and major theological themes of the New Testament documents. Emphasis will be on understanding the purpose, approach and argument of each New Testament book/letter within the first century setting of the early church.
Christian Perspective 3
Challenges students to consider how general revelation (creation) and special revelation (the Scriptures) of God affects every aspect of life. Each student will be encouraged to develop a truly Christian world view and understand and critique competing world views.
Evangelism and Discipleship 3
A study of the nature, purpose, and process of biblical evangelism and its application to various ministries; a study of New Testament discipleship principles and their application, with a special emphasis upon building discipling relationships and small group ministry.
Foundations of Teaching and Preaching 3
A "cross-training" module to introduce the principles and skills necessary to effectively communicate Scripture through teaching and preaching delivery. Practical application assignments will be made, and reports/presentations given. Emphasis will be placed on methods and applications.
Internship II 3
Christian Leadership major will culminate with a student analysis of their internship experience in a final report.
